A speeding semi trailer was involved in a multi vehicle accident on the I-39 near Ogle, Illinois last Monday, resulting in one fatality and several people injured, two seriously.
Last Monday’s fatal accident was caused by a semi truck driver. The driver has already been given a citation for failing to reduce speed as he passed into a construction zone just after 3 p.m.
The tractor trailer rear ended a SUV on the southbound section of the highway. The SUV ended up in the ditch at the side of the highway. The truck continued to smash into one vehicle after another before rolling to a halt with the driver himself needing hospital treatment.
The injury tally included the driver of the first SUV, who had to be cut out of the vehicle and flown to hospital in a helicopter. The female driver is still in a serious condition but tragically her husband, who was sitting in the SUV’s passenger seat, was killed. The only other person apart from the truck driver needing medical attention was the passenger of the last auto to be struck. All other vehicle occupants were no doubt severely shaken, but not seriously harmed.
The accident was the second to involve injuries in that part of the I-39 on that day. Just down the road, another car was rear-ended when a woman slowed down in traffic and was hit by a vehicle coming up behind her.
